The network's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the network introduced a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. During a period often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Executive Acclaim

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and supported its distinctly quirky appeal.

"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about watching this lovable family navigate their daily lives.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to evolve comedy past its current layer of irony. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

What Comes Next

Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially help usher in that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to bask in the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
