Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.

He was celebrated for his defined forms and performative fashion, including the soft-colored suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

This news arrives less than a month after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he started his work in clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping sculptural silhouettes established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he started creating pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included various looks for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.

After a career spanning half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
  • Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The industry laments the passing to a true visionary whose influence on style and culture remains profoundly felt.
