The English Team to Launch the European Championship 2028 Journey at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium
England’s men’s team will initiate their Euro 2028 adventure at the the home of Manchester City, assuming they secure the anticipated passage for a competition staged throughout the bulk of Britain and the Irish Republic.
City’s stadium has not hosted an Three Lions game since May 2016, when the Turkish team were beaten 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is highly likely to host the national team for their opening fixture on Saturday 10 June 2028.
England are scheduled to play their concluding group fixtures at Wembley Stadium, but, should they win Group B, their round of 16 match would be held at the Newcastle stadium. Finishing second would mean starting the elimination stage at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Championship Kickoff and Protest
The tournament was unveiled at an ceremony in central London on the previous evening. High-ranking officials from Uefa and the host FAs were heckled as they approached the venue by about 50 activists, who urged Israel’s national side to be kicked out from global football because of the conflict in Gaza.
Signs were raised with messages reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists called out: “Kick Israel out.”
Event Fixture List
The first match of the European Championship will be played at the Cardiff’s stadium in the Welsh capital, on Friday 9 June, a match that will involve Wales if they secure a place.
Wembley will host the penultimate rounds and the final, which will be held on a Sunday in July 2028 with a kick-off time at 5pm.
It is hoped that an earlier start, which will also be adopted for Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will cater to families and help engage a wider spectrum of fans.
Host Nations
The Irish team are scheduled to play their first game at the Aviva Stadium and Scotland would do the same at Hampden Park.
All four host countries’ teams will take part in the preliminary stage; two guaranteed slots will be set aside for any that fail to qualify for the tournament through that route.
Locations and Knockout Stage
Villa Park and Spurs’ ground round out the event’s nine venues. Every stadium will hold at least one elimination game, with the last eight staged at each country’s national stadium.
The qualification draw will be conducted in Belfast, which was dropped as a host city last year when it emerged the Belfast stadium could not be redeveloped in time, on December 6, 2026.
Tournament Vision
“It will be a competition for the supporters and a festival of everything we cherish about the game – its fervor and capacity to bring people together.”
In excess of three million passes, a record for a Euro tournament, are projected to be offered to attendees.
