Israelis have come together throughout the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-initiated attack on 7 October 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the war in Gaza.

The attack resulted in more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely deadliest day for the Jewish community since the World War II.

Israel answered by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are seen as trustworthy by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"The bloodthirsty enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister remarked on Tuesday.

He also promised to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the release of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will never again present a threat to Israel".

Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel

The government authorities delayed formal commemorations until 16 October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but events still occurred around the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the relatives of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was organized in the coastal city. Organized by the affected families, it was televised throughout Israeli television channels.

Hours earlier, a silent tribute was held around the country.

Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt

At the same time, both sides' negotiating teams met in the Egyptian tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of indirect talks to review the terms of the agreement.

A prominent Palestinian official involved in the talks revealed that an late session of indirect talks began at evening in Egypt.

The official explained the earlier meeting finished without significant progress, because of conflicting views over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not recommence fighting after the opening period of the agreement.

He commented that the negotiations are "difficult and have still not achieve any real breakthrough," but pointed out that facilitators are striving to narrow the differences between the two sides.

Key Matters in Discussions

  • A lasting ceasefire
  • The exchange of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The removal of troops from Gaza
  • Plans for assistance provision
  • Future governance of the territory

Civilian Reaction

In the city's memorial area previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother endured the attack on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were lost their lives and dozens more were captured by Hamas gunmen - told: "Nowhere appears as home now and until each abducted person return none of us will be secure."

"After we see all home again, we can relax again. Then we can begin to heal," she continued.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in the capital, people congregated to show their support for the families of the hostages. Israel states forty-eight continue in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be surviving.

Protester one woman remarked: "We need do whatever arrangement required for the hostages to return. But we really want promises that we will be secure."

Opinion polls now regularly indicate that about the majority of the population desire the conflict to end in return for the freedom of the abducted.

Gaza Conditions

At the site of the gathering, mourners came together to pay their respects.

From there, the sound of military attacks and explosions could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the severe Israeli bombardment persisted.

In the main city, air and artillery strikes were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, area and locality districts and in the eastern district of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.

"Once the night arrives, the anxiety appears with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli bombing previously, described.

"We are fearful of the air strikes. During nighttime we are resting together, clinging, especially my youngest child who rests his head on me all night."

"Continuously we look at the updates to see developments. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be achieved and that the fighting will come back to us."

Medical Crisis

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area announced it had accepted the remains of half dozen people by the midday, including a trio killed in an Israeli attack in the south part district.

Another medical facility in the southern urban center of the city said two more fatalities had been transported. One of them was killed by Israeli forces while attempting to get aid to the south, medical staff said.
