Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Considering a Presidential Campaign for 2028

The California governor, a leading member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he plans to decide on whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 after the 2026 elections are over.

"Yeah, I couldn't be truthful otherwise," Newsom stated when asked about giving serious thought to a presidential run post the 2026 midterms. "That wouldn't be honest. And I won't do that."

Newsom's tenure as governor ends in January 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he cautioned that any decision is not imminent.

"It's up to destiny," he said.

Increased Visibility as a Trump Critic

The California governor has emerged as a prominent adversary of the current federal leadership, using his online platforms and advocating for a initiative that would boost Democratic representation in Congress in following redistricting by Republicans. This move has made him a target from adversaries.

Clash on Transportation

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom does not care about Californians in a recent appearance on a major news network. Duffy revealed a strategy to withhold federal funds from the state and threatened suspending the state's ability to grant CDLs.

"I intend to cut $160 million from the state," Duffy stated, in the wake of a recent tragic collision in the state involving an unauthorized trucker that led to loss of life and casualties.

The governor's team noted that the federal government had approved the worker's status multiple times, which permitted him to obtain a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.

The transportation secretary had previously stated he was holding back additional funds from the state for failing to implement English language requirements for commercial drivers.

Firm Rebuttal from the Team

"Former D-list reality star, now cabinet member, continues to misunderstand national statutes," his administration retorted in a previous release countering Duffy's threats. "For now, in contrast to this person, we'll stick to the facts: California commercial driver's license holders had a death rate significantly lower than the national average. Texas – the single state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Statistics are clear. This administration is dishonest."

Polling Data and Campaign Considerations

A this month's study revealed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and almost half of voters indicated that the governor should run for the White House in 2028. Since Trump took office, public support for the governor has increased to an mean of a third from around 30%, while his unfavorability has dropped from an typical level of more than 40% to current figures.

In previous months, the governor stated while traveling several battleground states that he had "uncertainty" about his plans for the next presidential election.

He mentioned his past difficulties, including being identified as dyslexic at the young age of five.

"The idea that a person who got 960 on his SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was always in the back of the classroom – that such a possibility is discussed is, by itself, remarkable," he said. "Who the hell knows? I await who presents themselves in the next election and who answers the call. And that's the question for the American people."
