Ceramic Gift, Anyone? Meloni to Auction Off International Gifts for Good Cause
Getting rid of unwanted presents might be seen as a little discourteous – unless it's done in the proper manner.
A Charitable Sale
The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, will offload around 270 presents received by her by world leaders while abroad. This unusual assortment is said to contain items such as a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.
The presents, together, have an approximate value of €800,000. They are scheduled to be sold in a public auction by a Rome-based art dealer. A date has not been finalized, although the goal is to hold the auction by year's end, with the proceeds going to non-profit organizations.
Palazzo Chigi Treasures
The presents reportedly locked away in a secure area on the upper level of the government headquarters. It has been reported that Meloni is also planning to auction off gifts given to her political forerunners that have been gathering dust indefinitely.
A complete inventory remains made public, but partial details were revealed earlier this year when an 11-page list of items received was presented in parliament. The query raised if a statutory cap on gift value was being honored. According to regulation, a prime minister cannot take home presents worth more than €300.
A Global Array of Gifts
The collection includes:
- A woven wrap from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A traditional Kerala dress from the Indian leader.
- A set of adornments from the Slovakian president.
- A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A pottery dish from the former US president.
- A tablet from the leader of Ukraine.
- Watercolour paintings from the Moldovan government.
- Various other items including makeup, a board, and numerous carpets received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Possibly the oddest gifts were the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.
Political Context
Meloni has been credited, mainly from her own political sphere, with building relationships with foreign leaders and re-establishing Italy as a significant player on the world stage once again.
The forthcoming sale symbolizes a novel approach to deal with the protocol gifts that build up during a political career.
