An esteemed Russian military figure has been declared dead following an explosion in Moscow, according to official statements.

The attack took place on Monday morning when an IED planted beneath a vehicle exploded, resulting in the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov held the position of the head of the armed forces' department for training operations.

Authorities indicated that one possible explanation involves the possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. So far, Ukraine has remained silent.

Scene of the Incident

Teams have been sent to the scene, which is reportedly in a southern district of the metropolis.

Media coverage indicate the detonation took place in a vehicle lot close to a residential building.

Pattern of Incidents

Since the start of the full-scale conflict in Ukraine, a series of Russian military officials have been subjected to assaults within Moscow.

This new event follows other high-profile incidents, including:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a automobile blast in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov was killed in late 2024 when a device concealed on a scooter was triggered from afar.

While a source from Ukraine earlier attributed Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such claims are not officially confirmed as a matter of policy.

The conflict has increasingly seen shadowy operations reaching into the center of the Russian capital.

The investigation into General Sarvarov's death is still ongoing.
